Le Commandant Charcot Cruise Vessel

Application Overview

Le Commandant Charcot is a state of the art icebreaker cruise vessel designed for operation in polar regions and extreme marine environments. Reliable maneuverability in ice conditions depends on high power thruster systems capable of delivering controlled torque and dependable performance under severe operating loads.

Medium voltage soft starters for Marine Thrusters were selected to control the motor starting while protecting the vessel’s electrical network and mechanical propulsion components.

The Challenge

Thruster motors on ice class vessels are exposed to high starting torque, variable load conditions, and frequent start cycles. Direct-on-line starting can cause excessive inrush current, voltage drops, and increased mechanical stress on motors, shafts, couplings, and gearboxes.

The vessel required a marine rated medium voltage soft starter solution capable of delivering smooth motor acceleration, electrical stability, and long term reliability in harsh operating conditions.

The Solcon-IGEL Solution

Solcon-IGEL supplied two HRVS-DN medium voltage soft starters to control the vessel’s thruster motors that were designed for heavy duty industrial and marine applications, the HRVS-DN is recognized for its precise control of motor starting while it reduces  electrical and mechanical stress.

The solution supports consistent thruster performance under varying load conditions, contributing to safe maneuverability and operational reliability during ice navigation.
